March 25 marks the feast of the Solemnity of the Annunciation. Here are some important facts and thoughts to consider about this Annunciation.
1. Understanding the Annunciation
The annunciation commemorates the moment the angel Gabriel announced God’s plan for Mary. She would be the mother of God’s son, Jesus Christ. This moment marks God’s decision to become man to save us from original sin, the divine angel entering the physical realm to impart divine knowledge onto Mary, and Mary’s steadfast obedience.
2. Why March 25?
The annunciation also marks the moment of Mary’s conception. While maintaining her virginity, God gave her his son. In 9 months on December 25, we remember the birth of God’s child. We celebrate the annunciation on March 25, because its exactly 9 months before we celebrate Jesus’ birth.
3. Mary's Virginity
It is widely considered that while she was close to Joseph, she was not planning to marry him. Rather, she consecrated her virginity to God much like a modern-day nun. This special relationship with God would allow her to keep her physical virginity while also carrying the son of God in her womb.
4. Mary's Response
Mary’s response to the angel Gabriel was pivotal for the completion of God’s plan to become man and walk this earth. Rather than questioning God’s divine will or prioritizing the backlash she would face from her neighbors, she accepts God’s plan with modesty and resilience. We should use her example in our own lives. Though there may be moments where we question God’s will and action within our own lives, we should do our best to maintain complete faith in his plan, just like Mary.
5. Annunciation in Salvation
This day set is aside to commemorate the beginning of God’s plan to save humanity, the announcement of the angel Gabriel, and Mary’s faithful and obedient response. This weekend, beginning with Palm Sunday, we recall this very path to salvation. Before we take the next week to consider the power of Jesus’ death and resurrection, we can remember the moment that allowed this divine plan to come to fruition.
