From the Vocations Office

FEB-APRIL 2025

These first few months of 2025 are already off to a busy start for the Vocations Office. As mentioned in the previous edition of ‘The Seraph,’ The ‘SEEK Conference’ in Salt Lake City, UT, launched an exciting and optimistic new year of vocation promotion. Since then, Br. Bernard Mary has had many more invitations and opportunities to share our life as Franciscans and engage with young people earnestly discerning God’s call for their life.

In February, the University of Wisconsin – Platteville hosted a week of vocational talks and prayer; Br. Bernard Mary was asked to come and share his story with the large group of young men, alongside Bishop Donald Hying of the Diocese of Madison. The men were genuinely interested and had great opportunity for discussion and Q&A.

Our Parish of Mary, Mother of God in Chicago hosted a Vocations Day for the students enrolled in the Religious Education program; Br. Bernard Mary, together with a Sister from the Franciscans of the Eucharist, a young lawyer, and a volunteer from the Food Pantry, took turns sharing their faith journey and ultimately what led them to their respective Vocations.

Br. Bernard Mary then ventured up to the Kenyan Friars’ presence in the Green Bay Diocese, where he was invited to speak at Masses and was also asked to present a talk to the Middle and High School Religious Education students at the Clintonville Parish of St. Rose; the topic was on Discernment and incorporated the Jubilee Year theme, ‘Pilgrims of Hope.’

As the March deadline for those applying to enter the CFF Postulancy Program from our Province approached, the four applicants came to the House of Studies in Chicago, on two separate weekends respectively, to undertake their psychological evaluations as the final step in the application process. Dr. Barbera Toohill from the Antioch Group in Peoria, IL, graciously made the trip up both times to administer the evaluations – she is a former parishioner of ours from Holy Family and a good friend of the friars who served there.

Br. Bernard Mary took the long road trip to Bismark, ND, to join the students and staff of the University of Mary for their annual ‘Vocations Jamboree.’ The organizers said that this 10th anniversary year is the largest event yet, with around seventy exhibitors from religious congregations and organizations. The Conventual booth was blessed to be assigned prime real estate at the front entrance of the building near the cafeteria where there was high traffic and plenty of engagement. Attendees were intrigued by the first-class relics on display at the booth, many young men took materials for further discernment, and a handful even left their details for follow-up. While in Bismark, Br. Bernard Mary and Sr. Teresa Paul, from the Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis, made a pilgrimage to the burial site of Servant of God Michelle Duppong, a young local woman and longtime Focus Missionary whose cause for Canonization has been opened by the Diocese of Bismark; while there, they were able to meet Michelle’s parents and spend the day on their farm, joining the family for lunch and hearing the first-hand accounts of her amazing life, her battle with cancer, and the many miracles already attributed to her intercession.

On the first weekend of April, our community at the House of Studies in Chicago hosted five men for a Come & See weekend; three from the Chicago area, one from La Crosse, WI, and another from Green Bay, WI. Over the weekend, the guests heard from the experiences of the Postulants and Friars; received a session on St. Francis of Assisi and the Conventual Franciscan tradition; joined the community for meals and prayer; watched a beautiful film on St. Anthony of Padua; and toured our Chicago churches and outreach ministries. The men truly appreciated the experience with the friars, and a number have expressed a desire to continue discernment with our community.

As we come to the end of the ‘academic year,’ and our students move onto the next stages of formation, we pray especially for Friars Anthony Ruffolo and Tarcisius Bucca as they prepare for their Solemn Vow pilgrimage to Italy, and their Solemn Profession in September; for Friar Maximilian Anselm Rewa, as he continues his studies in San Antonio and undertakes a Spanish emersion in Costa Rica; for Friar James Muzzey, as he completes the Novitiate year and professes Simple Vows in July; for George Harris, who completes Postulancy and will be invested as a Novice Friar in July; and finally for the three men, Joshua, Craig, and Jacob, who have been accepted into the CFF Postulancy Program for 2025-26 with our SB Province and will reside at the Chicago House of Studies from July. Thank you all for your ongoing support of our men in formation, as well as for our efforts in promoting vocations to our Conventual Franciscan fraternity in the Midwest; may the Lord truly bless you, and give you His peace.
